Monaco museums

Monaco prides itself on its glitz and glamour, but as a popular tourist destination it has remarkable heritage, culture and a variety of museums to show this off. Below are a couple we recommend visiting if you ever find yourself in this little paradise.

The Museum of ‘Vieux Monaco’ 2 Rue Emile de Loth

web site

Free of charge.
Limited opening times: Between Wednesdays and Fridays from 11am to 4pm between June and September

Directions: From Place du Palais, follow the well-marked signs for the museum. It is about 200 metres before the Musée Oceanographique.

The museum was established by Le Comité National des Traditions Monégasques (The National Committee of Monegasque Traditions) with the intention to fight against the risk of losing Monaco’s national identity. The museum showcases objects relating to Monaco’s heritage such as paintings, furniture and costumes.

Perhaps our favourite Monaco tourist attraction, the Oceanographic museum is impressive and informative as well as fun. Founded by Prince Albert I, a keen oceanographer, it has a floor dedicated to his adventures and finds, both at sea and from his laboratory-style yacht on Monaco’s harbour. You can see maps of the ocean’s floor, weird specimens preserved in dodgy looking liquids and explorer yachts and diving suits from eras gone by. The main attractions are the fantastic whale skeleton hanging from the ceiling and the shark tank in the aquarium. The aquarium is one of the best in the world with hundreds of beautiful species of coral reefs and tropical fish from around the world.
