Nice's fabulous Photography Museum

Nice’s photography museum is a big hitter. A prime location opposite the Préfecture, coupled with decades of experience, draws in A-grade photo exhibitions.

Think Steve McCurry, who shot the National Geographic cover of the green-eyed Afghan girl. Or Henri Cartier-Bresson, the Berlin-Madrid-Beijing-New York street photographer who founded Magnum Photos. And Brassaï, the photographer they called 'The Eye of Paris', who wandered the City of Light by night snapping drinkers, diners, prostitutes and pals like Picasso and Matisse.

The museum also houses the collection of local photographer Charles Nègre. After shooting for the French state, Nègre retired to Nice to produce his best work: late 19th-century images of the Promenade des Anglais, the long-lost casino jetty and Le Plongeoir restaurant (shaped like a boat on an island near Nice port).

Nice’s most popular photo spot? That would be the #ILoveNICE hashtag installation at the Promenade’s eastern tip. The handle has 350,000 Instagram posts and counting.
