Gluten-free, egg-free, vegan and organic. It’s all offered by the sympathetic (and bilingual) chefs at Le Comptoir, Nice’s leading whole food establishment.

The day starts with breakfasts of sustainably sourced coffee and non-dairy cakes. Lunchtime is busiest thanks to a two-course set menu for €15.50. Items change weekly but can include an assiette of raw vegetables followed by cod aioli, or a non-gluten quiche followed by a 'bio' lasagne bolognaise.

Le Comptoir’s menu de la semaine is so popular that it pays to book ahead. A sample from a previous week reveals stuffed squid and aubergine risotto on a Wednesday, cod cheeks and ratatouille on a Thursday, and aioli followed by organic chicken à l'indienne on a Friday.

The à la carte items recall flavours barely seen in Nice. Think Korean bibimbap and Thai drunken tofu. Just as yummy are the salad du jour (€12) and Niçoise assiette (€17.50), the latter a vast platter of market-fresh local bites. Come Christmas, even the bûche de noël is vegan, while in summer the beanburger offers a tastier, and healthier, riposte to the nearby branch of McDonalds.
